Tonal Art Music Center has been teaching music to all ages and levels to the Jersey City and Hoboken community for the past 10 years. We teach guitar, piano, violin, sax, clarinet, voice, percussion and flute. At present we have 8 teachers who not only work regularly as professional musicians but also hold advanced degrees in music and have years of teaching experience.
Founded in 2011 by Matt Panayides and Hyeseon Hong, the school moved to 47B Harrison Street at Chambord Place in 2014. The school thrived, creating a community of local families and adult students while creating an educational niche based on high musical standards coupled with an embrace of a wide variety of music styles with a jazz emphasis. Finally just last year our dream space opened up on the other side of the complex.
Last December we started renovation on our new space at 38B Jackson Street creating individual rooms for private lessons as well as ensemble rooms. We also began stocking instruments (saxes, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, violins and cellos) for rent. We began teaching in person again as soon as the pandemic allowed this year and began offering ensemble classes and music classes for preschool students. This year was the best year for us yet as we added new teachers and many new students joined our school.
We were wrapping up the year on a high note with a wonderful school recital on Friday Dec 17th where our students really shined overcoming a lot of challenges in the past year. Little did we know that there was one more challenge ahead with the school being destroyed days later. Tonal Art Music Center has obtained a temporary space to continue in-person lessons at Grace Church Van Vorst while we locate and build out a new permanent space.
